Most of the way to McMurdo we were in the ship channel that was created during the austral summer by the US Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star with the help of the Russian icebreaker "Krasin". This channel was cut through heavy sea ice and had begun to refreeze. The result was that we were breaking ice and moving massive chunks.
