All of my aurora pictures were taken at the Hotel Rángá from the flat area by the river shown in my Hotel Rángá panorama. The shots with a river reflection were shot to the west over the river (right in the panorama). The first eight images were taken with my Nikon D100 digital SLR and using a Nikon 24-120mm (f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR) zoom lens. Mostly the lens was set full open at f/3.5 and 24mm (36mm equivalent). Exposure times varied from 5 to 30 seconds. A noise reduction auto dark was taken for each frame. For even better aurora shots, see those taken by my friend Jay Potts. Jay's were taken with a fast fish eye lens and film. In hindsight, I like my digital camera for aurora but wish I had brought a fast fish eye lens for the D100. A few frames were film shots with an old Minolta, these used Fuji Provia 400. I will be posting some of those in about a week.
One of the things that a viewer should bear in mind is that, compared to viewing the aurora in person, the photos are both better and worse. They are better because the colors are more intense than what your eye can see. They are worse because the photos do not display the motion of the aurora, often very rapid, changing in a second or less. One has to see the sky-spanning, rapidly flickering, real aurora in person to have truly seen it!
